As a small organization trying to change the world, we are grateful to the many individuals who are helping to institute Plan B. See how people are sharing the Plan B vision with their community, in classrooms, and beyond.

IN THE COMMUNITY
At the heart of EPI's mission is building a sustainable future. Here are some examples of how communities across the globe are spreading our vision.

IN THE POLITICAL ARENA
EPI publications are read by political leaders at all levels, often incorporating EPI research findings into policy initiatives. View how individuals have used EPI materials in the political realm.

ON THE LECTURE CIRCUIT
People often base lectures on EPI research and others set up lectures specifically for EPI speakers. See how people are sharing EPI with audiences of all types.

IN THE CLASSROOM
EPI’s books are regular supplemental texts in colleges and universities throughout the world. The following represent only a small fraction of the ways they are used.

ON THE INTERNET
There are over 130,000 links to EPI’s website. Some websites translate EPI materials and post them. Others are formed because of our message. Check out some of the sites that have been inspired by EPI's work.

OTHER USES
The ways EPI publications motivate people to take action are as varied as the individuals themselves. Churches use them in study groups. They are the book of the month in book clubs. View other, diverse ways people use our materials.

Are you involved in disseminating the Plan B vision? We'd love to hear from you. Please write us at [email protected].

IN THE COMMUNITY

One Community is a diverse group of volunteers inspired to design and freely share alternatives to the environmentally unsustainable status quo. With novel approaches to providing food, energy, housing, education, and economics, they are creating a duplicable prototype community that addresses many Plan B issues while demonstrating that it is possible to create ways of living that are more personally fulfilling, globally accessible, and ecologically sustainable.

The Global Energy Network Institute (GENI), based in San Diego, California, focuses on the interconnection of electric power networks between communities, nations, and continents, with an emphasis on tapping abundant renewable energy resources. They host regular discussion forums at the World Resources SimCenter. Their newest discussion series is based on the Plan B book series and they will host a 13 evening discussion/salon for the San Diego community. They will use the Plan B books as the syllabus, invite a local Subject Matter Expert from the University of California San Diego and San Diego State University, and find the best trend and graphic info to visually understand the past and future projections – and solution choices.

Impressed with the film version of Plan B, the Guemes Island Environmental Trust in Anacortes, Washington created an essay contest for high school aged youth. The essay challenge topic was, “What is the biggest threat to humans from climate change and how will you engage your friends to turn it around?” Contestants were also required to respond to the documentary, “Plan B, Mobilizing to Save Civilization.” Local schools and other organizations were contacted to promote responses from youths 15 to 20 years of age.  They raised funds to provide awards which were presented for the top four essays at the Anacortes Library on May 25, 2012.

Doris and Lars Almstrom have just published Full Planet, Empty Plates in Sweden. At the same time they are spreading the Plan B movement through newsletters, organizing gatherings, giving lectures, and doing whatever else to promote action for change. (For some examples, click here).  Meanwhile, the EPI books they’ve already published are being used as textbooks in several universities in Sweden. And throughout the country people are organizing study circles to read the Plan B books.

IN THE POLITICAL ARENA

Although inspired by reading Plan B 2.0 some years ago, technologist and environmentalist George Jones from Wellington, New Zealand figured that few politicians would take the time to read it or subsequent Plan B tomes. He found just the right book with World on the Edge. With the help of colleagues, he bought nearly 300 copies and is distributing them to all politicians, city mayors, and top movers and shakers in New Zealand.

In honor of their father who unexpectedly passed away, the Sloan brothers distributed copies of Full Planet, Empty Plates to members of Congress. In their letter accompanying the book they wrote, “The enclosed book, Full Planet, Empty Plates: The New Geopolitics of Food Scarcity by Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute, contains the best analysis of what Chuck Sloan inherently knew. The 21st century will not mirror the 20th century.  While the latter was witness to resource abundance and consumption, the former will be defined by resource scarcity.”

As America reels from the worst environmental disaster in our nation's history, renewable energy advocate Tom Weis is taking action by pedaling a hybrid electric bicycle 3,000 miles from Colorado to our nation's capitol demanding a U.S.-led green industrial revolution. He'll be profiling the choice in front of us: green energy solutions like wind, solar and geothermal, or polluting energy problems like coal burning, nuclear plants, mountaintop removal mining and, of course, catastrophic oil spills. The "Ride for Renewables: 100% by 2020" was inspired, in no small part, by Lester Brown's Plan B books. To help, or learn more, please visit: www.ClimateCrisisSolutions.com.

Tom Kahan, a former history teacher, has been inspired by EPI to push Congress to get the market to tell the ecological truth. See his website http://timetogetsmarter.org/ for more information.

In an effort to raise public and political awareness on cutting CO2 emissions and raising energy efficiency, the Committee for a Secure Green Future in Massachusetts successfully put a Plan B initiative on its November 2008 ballot. In a landslide decision, constituents in 11 districts voted over 81 percent in favor of legislation that will achieve an 80 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Massachusetts by 2020 instead of the state’s target of 2050. It also calls for phasing out tax incentives for energy-intensive businesses, and promoting job expansion for local businesses and co-ops involved in sustainable practices. Since the votes were non-binding instructions, the committee plans to continue lobbying and circulating the statewide petition to garner grassroots support beyond the 11 districts.

OTHER USES

George A. Macpherson has written a novel based around Lester Brown’s Plan B. The Glebe Field is a romance that centers around a young couple starting a Plan B for Action foundation and a legal fight between them and developers. Read more.

In 2007, Dr. Bonnie Winslow-Garvin, a school psychologist and long-time fan of Lester’s work, gave her husband Michael Garvin a copy of Plan B 2.0. Garvin was so inspired by Lester’s call to action that he left his national security consulting work to focus on moving the world to a carbon-free energy economy. In 2009 they founded RENAIS, a renewable energy technology and financing consultancy specializing in wind power, in their home state of Iowa. Garvin also wanted to act internationally. He decided to begin with the Caribbean, a region heavily dependent upon fossil fuel imports, where highly-polluting diesel generators dominate the electricity sector. With contacts in Curacao’s utilities and government, including former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte, Garvin is encouraging retrofits of the country’s diesel-fueled vehicles and power stations to boost efficiency and cut pollution, using “hydrogen hybrid” technology from Canadian firm dynaCERT. Garvin, focusing his longer-term efforts on alternative energy production combined with battery storage, envisions Curacao becoming the first zero-carbon energy economy. More broadly, he plans to play a consulting role as the 15-nation Caribbean Community (CARICOM) implements its recently-agreed Regional Energy Policy, which emphasizes conservation, efficiency, and renewables as key for long-term energy security.
